PUNXSUTAWNEY — An attempted robbery at gunpoint in the Punxy Plaza parking lot was foiled thanks to quick thinking by the victim on Friday morning.

According to Punxsutawney Borough Police Chief James Borza, at 11:09 a.m. on Friday, an unknown white male dressed in a brown jacket and an orange knit cap attempted to rob a customer at gunpoint in the parking lot in the Punxy Plaza near the Uni-Mart store.

Borza said the victim, an elderly white female from Punxsutawney, fooled the suspect by saying, “There’s the police,” which caused the suspect to drop his gun. Then, the victim kicked it under a vehicle.

According to Borza, the suspect fled the scene, and the gun turned out to be a BB gun.

Anyone with information on the suspect or who may have seen anything is asked to contact the Punxsutawney Borough Police at (814) 938-6220.

The investigation continues.
