Firefighters battled extreme heat to knock down a fully involved garage fire in North Mahoning Township on Tuesday afternoon. Firefighters from Perry Township, Punxsutawney, Marion Center, Ringgold and Plumville battled the blaze that could be seen for many miles at 153 Miller Rd., North Mahoning Township. According to reports from the scene, the garage had heavy smoke and flames showing as crews arrived. It took about 10 minutes for firefighters to knock down the flames. With turnout gear on, the temperature rose to more than 100 degrees for the volunteer firefighters. No vehicles had been parked in the garage, but there was hay stored inside, which fueled the flames. The fire was fought with a tanker shuttle, and the Big Run Area Volunteer Fire Company was brought in for overhaul and cleanup. Firefighters were assisted at the scene by Jefferson County EMS. There were no injuries, and the cause of the fire was unknown at Spirit press time. (Photo by Larry McGuire/The Punxsutawney Spirit)
