Local crews knock down S. Gilpin St. fire

Local crews spent the wee hours of Thursday morning battling a fire that was reported at 2:30 a.m. at 214 South Gilpin St. in Punxsutawney. Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police said the building was a three-story apartment complex owned by Virginia Martha Shaffer of Rossiter, but had been vacant and without utilities since March of this year. The Fire Marshal Unit was requested to determine the origin and cause of the fire, and the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about the fire is
