Muto voted in as new school board member

PUNXSUTAWNEY — On Wednesday evening, the Punxsutawney Area School Board met and discussed a variety of topics. Included in those topics was the vote for a replacement board member for Francis J. Molinaro's seat. Molinaro passed away last month but was remembered by the board at the April 13 meeting.

Borough police investigating two-vehicle accident

PUNXSUTAWNEY — One vehicle was towed from the scene in a two-vehicle accident that occurred at 5:21 p.m. on Monday at the intersection of North Gilpin Street and West Mahoning Street, Punxsutawney.

According to reports from the scene, a Ford Mustang convertible and a Chevrolet 2500 pickup truck somehow collided in the intersection of North Gilpin and West Mahoning streets.

The Mustang came to rest on the sidewalk near the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club Headquarters and the truck on Mahoning Street.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — On Saturday evening, members of the 2015 class of the Punxsutawney Sports Hall of Fame — joined by their families, their friends, members of the hall's committee, former inductees and their families and Punxsy sports fans in general — gathered to for their official induction ceremony and banquet and to "celebrate the athletic experience."

Lady Chucks gaining steam

The Lady Chucks made it three wins in a row on Wednesday with a 9-3 victory over Hollidaysburg in Punxsutawney. Kylee Lingenfelter (pictured here) hurled a complete game to pick up a win in her first varsity start.

Boys' tennis also picked up its first win of the season on Wednesday against Johnsonburg. For these recaps and plenty more, see Thursday's print edition of The Spirit.

Charges to be filed against juvenile in bomb threat

On Monday, Punxsutawney Borough Police were called to the Punxsutawney Area High School for the report of a bomb threat.

With the assistance of the state police, the school was evacuated, and a bomb dog was requested. The state police sent two bomb dog handlers, and the school was searched, with nothing being located.

Bomb threat discovered at PAHS

April 13, 2015

At the conclusion of the school day on Monday, a bomb threat was discovered in a restroom at the Punxsutawney Area High School.

According to a statement issued by Superintendent Dr. Keith Wolfe, the administration immediately notified the authorities and evacuated and secured the building.

A full-scale search of the building was conducted by police, and the building was deemed safe. School is expected to resume as normal Tuesday morning.

Anthony honored as member of World Pizza Champ team

PUNXSUTAWNEY — After working in the pizza industry for many years, Scott Anthony, owner of Punxsy Pizza, was both shocked and humbled when World Pizza Championship Winner Tony Gemignani announced that he had appointed Anthony to serve on his World Pizza Championship team.

Anthony said the decision was announced while he was recently at the International Pizza Expo. Gemignani said he chose Anthony and four others to be on his team.

PAHS Variety Show opens curtain tonight

Tonight's the night the curtain goes up on the 2015 Punxsutawney Area High School (PAHS) Variety Show in the auditorium. Pictured are some of the emcees for this year's program as they perform another funny lead in to another skit during the show. Reserved tickets are $8, and general admission tickets are $6. Come and support the Class of 2015 as they raise money for the Margaret C. Boles Foundation!

Borza officially sworn in as new police chief

New Punxsutawney Borough Police Chief James Borza (second from left) is pictured being sworn in and taking the oath of office on Tuesday in council chambers by Punxsutawney Mayor Richard Alexander (far left). Borza's wife, Karen Borza, is pictured holding the Holy Bible for the ceremony. Alexander said that even though Borza was approved by Punxsutawney Borough Council to start work on Monday, he couldn't act in that capacity without officially being sworn in as chief.

DuBois man killed in one-car weekend accident

HUSTON TOWNSHIP — On Monday, DuBois-based Pennsylvania State Police issued a report of a fatal one-vehicle accident that occurred at 11:13 a.m. on Sunday on State Route 255, south of Winterburn Road, Huston Township, Clearfield County.

Police said Robert E. Quetot, 55, of DuBois, was traveling north on State Route 255 when he lost control of his 2008 Suzuki Sedan. The car then left the roadway and crashed into an embankment, causing it to roll over.

Police said Quetot was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected as the car rolled over.

Quetot was pronounced dead at the scene.

Those who knew him, served with him, remember Molinaro

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Francis J. Molinaro, 80, president of the Punxsutawney Area School Board, passed away on Thursday, April 2, 2015.

Punxsutawney Superintendent Dr. Keith Wolfe said that Molinaro’s leadership and participation on the school board will be truly missed by all.

"It's certainly a sad day for our district," Wolfe said. "Francis has served on our board for many years, and throughout that time, he has always kept in mind the best interest of the students. For years, he wanted to be board president, and with this last reorganization of the board, he became the board president."

Former student of Boles offers insight into legacy, Variety Show

PUNXSUTAWNEY — It's just about time for the annual Punxsutawney Area High School (PAHS) Variety Show.

The show will take place April 9 through April 11 in the PAHS auditorium. Every year, The Spirit gives a preview of some of the original skits that we're likely to see as part of the show.

We're going to bring that to you next week, but for now, we're going to take a look at the person whose name is most identified with the Variety Show — Margaret C. Boles.

Council approves chief's contract

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsy Borough Council approved the contract
of the newly hired police chief at a special meeting held on Wednesday.

James Borza, of Benezette, Pennsylvania, was hired as the new police chief at a special meeting held on March 24 in council chambers.

Larry Chenoga, Punxsutawney Borough Council president, said the motion to approve the contract for retired state trooper James Borza, was made by Aaron Hendricks, council member, and seconded by Brian Smith, council member, and was approved 7-0.
