PUNXSUTAWNEY — At last Monday's Punxsutawney Borough Council meeting, the Route 119 Elk Run Bridge Project was discussed, and PennDOT announced Monday that the project's largest detour will take effect this morning.
Beginning Tuesday, at 5:30 a.m., Route 119 will close to traffic between Jenks Avenue and Route 310, a release issued by Deborah Casadei, PennDOT District 10's public information and safety press officer said.
The release said the road closure will be in place until late September.
The detour in place will include Route 119 to Route 36 (East Mahoning Avenue), Route 36 to Route 2009 (Riker Road) and Route 2009 to Route 119 (see photo below).
One of the concerns raised at last week's council meeting was that the project would lead to increased traffic on borough streets that were not part of the detour, and Borough Police Chief Thomas Fedigan said that borough officers would police the area for aggressive drivers and speeders.
Casadei said the project includes the replacement of the Elk Run Bridge and roadway improvements at the intersection of Routes 119 and 310, including left-turn lanes.
And as is always the case, drivers are asked to proceed with the utmost caution in regard to workers' safety in the work zones.
"PennDOT reminds motorists to be alert to changing conditions and to pay attention to flaggers in the work zone," the release reads. "Remember, fines are doubled; drive responsibly in work zones for your safety and the safety of the workers."
The $3,354,600 project is being performed by Francis J. Palo, Inc., of Clarion and is expected to be completed by the end of September.
