Ruth Organ, 98, of Punxsutawney, died Saturday, June 14, 2014, at
Laurelbrooke Landing in Brookville.

She was born Jan. 29, 1916, in Sugarhill, Jefferson County, a daughter of the late Jay Merton and Florence Eleanor (Blight) Steele.

On April 22, 1938, she married James Alexander Organ III, who preceded her in death on Jan. 19, 1992.

Ruth was a member of the St. Peters United Church of Christ for 70 years.

Mrs. Organ and her husband, Jim, founded Bells Mills Trading Post, Inc., which pioneered propane gas business in Jefferson County.

She worked as the secretary/bookkeeper until she was 87 years old.

She was a volunteer at the Punxsutawney Area Hospital snack bar for 20 years.

Her enjoyments were being with her family, spending winters in Florida with her daughter, knitting, crocheting, reading and Bridge Club.

Surviving relatives include three children, Judy Organ of Satellite Beach, Florida, Donna McMinn of Punxsutawney, and James A. Organ IV and Jamie Stello of Punxsutawney; six grandchildren, Molly (McMinn) Clark and husband Joe, Marsha (McMinn) Shoop and husband Les, Jeff Dicello and Jennifer Stant, Julie (Dicello) Sutton and husband Ron, Jodi (Organ) Giacomelli and husband Jim, and Jayme (Organ) Farcus and husband Josh; 13 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Gladys Hughes and husband Merrill of Media, Pa.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Howell Steele; and two sisters, Josephine McNeil and Blanche Levis.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17, 2014, at Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at the funeral home, officiated by Michelle Huey.

Private interment will be at Union Cemetery, Rossiter.
