Robert Clair Shaffer, 82

Robert Clair Shaffer, 82, of Pansy Ringgold Road, Summerville, died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013, at Jefferson Manor.

Robert was born on Oct. 1, 1930, at the family home on Pansy Ringgold Road, a son of the late Clair Charles and Melda Mae (Spare) Shaffer.

On July 13, 1951, he married the former Alice Jean Sushereba. She survives.

Early in his career he worked for the U.S. Dept of Agriculture, then on to Sylvania. He then owned and operated the Interchange Sunoco, which was located at the intersection of routes 28 and 322, until 1965.

He later became a production foreman for Fairbrook Manufacturing and a maintenance man for White-Brook Lighting Company.

He was the founder of Shaffer’s Greenhouse on the Pansy Ringgold Road, which is still owned and operated by his daughter, Beverly Raybuck and husband John.

His hobbies were carpentry, farming and woodworking.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, Charles Shaffer and wife Judith of Brookville, William Shaffer and wife Laurie of Davison, Mich., Beverly Raybuck and husband John of Summerville, and Jeff Shaffer and wife Marcy of Suffolk, Va.; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mary Barr of Virginia and Kathryn West of Missouri.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Betty Kelly.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, at Brenda D. Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Brookville.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, at the funeral home, officiated by Pastor David Borger.

Interment will be at Zion Cemetery, Beaver Township, Jefferson County.

Memorial donations may be made in Mr. Shaffer’s memory to the Brookville First Baptist Church.
