Punxsutawney man arrested, charged with homicide, other counts
PUNXSUTAWNEY — At a press conference held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police announced that Michael Christopher Shugars, 32, of Punxsutawney, has been charged in relation to a homicide investigation that started Sunday night in Hamilton, Perry Township, just outside of Punxsutawney.
Police had reported to a bridge over Mahoning Creek just off of Miller Road after receiving a report from an area resident that human remains had been located below the bridge.
Investigators from the state police began the investigation that focused on the identity of the remains, which were determined to be those of Chet Allen Haddow, 33, of Punxsutawney.
On Monday, information developed by investigators led to the arrest of Shugars, who was charged with one count each of the following:
• criminal homicide;
• aggravated assault (felony 1);
• robbery (felony 1);
• abuse of corpse (misdemeanor 2);
• simple assault (misdemeanor 2);
• and theft by unlawful taking (misdemeanor 3).
