Phyllis Theresa Himes, 87

Phyllis Theresa Himes, 87, of Punxsutawney, died peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at Mulberry Square, where she had been a resident for the past four years.

She was surrounded by family and friends.

Phyllis was born June 4, 1926, in DeLancey, Pa.

She was the daughter of the late Cataldo and Theresa D. (Garvey) Scarantine.

Her father immigrated from Italy in 1899.

On Nov. 10, 1945, she married Reed M. Himes, who preceded her in death on Oct. 3, 2001.

She was a past member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the McCalmont Township Fire Company Auxiliary, St. Joseph's Church Choir and the Altar Rosary Society.

She was a Gold Star Mother, as her son, Bernard, was killed in Vietnam on May 17, 1968. She never fully got over his untimely death.

A past employee of Montgomery Ward, Stewart's Drug Store and a manager at Artley's, Phyllis enjoyed crocheting, playing bingo, and cooking for her family, as well as catering large dinner parties.

She hated bad hair days, but big hair was her trademark.

Phyllis is survived by three daughters, Ann Lott and husband Bob, Connie Hudock and husband Joe, all of Punxsutawney, and Mona Garzoni and husband Dick of Anita.

Surviving grandchildren include Todd Sherwin, his wife, Julia, and their children, Keira, Camille and Lachlan of Coatesville, Pa.; Troy Sherwin, his wife, Marti, and children Derek and wife Trish, Patrick, Megan and Alana of Harrisburg; Chris Hudock and his children, Rachel and Adam of Greensburg; Lisa Shenkle and son Matthew of Punxsutawney; and Shawn Garzoni, his friend, Tosha, and son Skyler of Anita.

Step-grandchildren are Eric Lott, his wife, Kelli, and their children, Graham and Evie of Punxsutawney; Shannon Kohm, her husband, Phil, and their children, Carlos Moscoso and Rachel Kohm of Glendale, Ariz.

Other step-great-grandchildren are John and Austin Garzoni of Harrisburg.

Two step-great-great-grandchildren survive, Kierstan and Daniel Keene of Spanaway, Wash.

Phyllis also leaves three sisters, Mary Simpson and husband Bob of Wales Center, N.Y.; Marge Lorelli and husband Sam of Anita; and Cass Remaley of DuBois.

In addition to her parents, husband and son, Phyllis was preceded in death by three brothers, Fracis, James and William Scarantine.

Friends will be recieved from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday Sept. 4, 2013, at McCabe Funeral Home in Punxsutawney.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday Sept. 5, 2013, at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Anita with Msgr. Joseph Riccardo as Celebrant.

Interment will follow at Adrian Anita Cemetery.
