BROOKVILLE — A tuneup game before facing your toughest district foe is always good.
The Punxsy softball team used its Route 36 rivalry game with Brookville as preparation for Wednesday’s showdown with St. Marys by cruising to a 14-0 five-inning run-rule victory in Brookville.
“It was nice to see some girls in different positions. A lot of the girls put the bat on the ball today,” noted Punxsy head coach Alan Pifer. “We have St. Marys on Wednesday, which is a big rival and a big game for us. We will have to play well as they are one of the toughest games on our schedule.”
The Lady Chucks (6-1) posted their third shutout of the last four games in the past week. The Monday visitors outhit the hosts 11-4 in the five-frame contest.’
In the circle, Monica Cameron fired a four-hitter for her first shutout.
The senior right-hander walked only one Lady Raider while fanning six.
“Monica pitched a nice game,” pointed out Pifer. “She kept them off balance and hit her spots. She hasn’t thrown since the season opener against Bradford (April 4), which was a considerable layoff. Monica was in control the whole game and we will need her pitching down the stretch of the season.”
Cameron was also helped by her defense. The Lady Chucks turned three double plays including back-to-back outfield assists to end the fourth and fifth innings.
In the home fourth, Stephanie Smith ran in to make a catch in right field, set herself and threw out Brookville’s Elaina Powell tagging up from second at third base.
Anna Horner made a nice running catch before firing from center field to her sister, Emily, at first base in the fifth inning.
At the plate, Ashley Walls was a home run away from hitting for the cycle and the only mult-hit Punxsy player. The catcher singled, tripled to deep center field and doubled to right center in her three at bats with two runs scored.
Chelsea Engeholm lined the other extra base hit with a three-run double to left field.
Left fielder Lauren Wolfe drove in two runners with her single and drew two walks.
Emily Horner and Savannah Hallman posted the other RBI singles on the day.
Nicole DiPietro, Ivy Phillips, Mary Sloniger and Alyssa Reitz added hits.
Sydney Phillips and Anna Horner had an RBI apiece on fielder’s choice plays, while Smith drew a bases loaded walk and score two times.
In the top of the first with two outs, Walls singled and stole second before Sydney Phillips was hit by a pitch. Both runners moved up two bases on wild pitches with Walls scoring for the first run.
Ivy Phillips drew a walk and stole second base. Wolfe would bring both of the Phillips runners home on a line drive through the left side of the infield to make it 3-0.
After an error on the first play on a dropped pop up, Cameron struck out the second batter. Powell made it two runners on base for Brookville with a single. The runners did not last as the Lady Raiders’ Kirsten Gordon lined out to Engeholm at shortstop, who flipped to Sloniger at second for the first Lady Chucks double play.
Following a scoreless second inning, Punxsy would add on to its lead.
Walls started the attack for the second time with a deep drive over the Brookville center fielder’s head for a stand up triple. For the second time, Walls raced home on a wild pitch.
Ivy Phillips singled, Wolfe walked and Sloniger singled to load the bases. After a force out at home with the bases still loaded, Smith drew a free pass for the frame’s second tally.
Engeholm cleared the bases on drive to the left field corner for a three-run double and an 8-0 score for Punxsy.
The second even numbered inning produced no runs for either club.
In the top of the fifth, Punxsy added another six runs to their total.
The Lady Chucks lined four hits with run-scoring hits from Emily Horner and Hallman, while drawing a pair of walks and three scoring fielder’s choices for a 14-0 contest.
Cameron allowed a leadoff hit by her mound opponent Nicole Dempsey of Brookville. A line drive caught by Anna Horner, who then erased Dempsey from base by quickly throwing to first for two outs. The Punxsy pitcher fanned the final Brookville hitter to complete the 14-0 five-inning affair.
Powell went 2 for 2 with singles to the left side to highlight the day for the Lady Raiders. Brianna Geer and Dempsey had the other two home hits.
The Lady Chucks will have a day off today before entertaining the other District IX favorite on Wednesday. St. Marys comes to Punxsy for a 4:15 p.m. contest.View more articles in:
