Harold P. Rhoades, 85

Harold P. Rhoades, 85, slept away peacefully surrounded by his family, Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013, at DRMC.

Harold was born on Aug. 29, 1928, in Gaskill Township, the son of Frank G. and Florence V. (Pifer) Rhoades. He married Helen E. Renwick on Nov. 24, 1960. The couple would have celebrated 53 years of marriage.

Harold was a fourth-generation dairy farmer, who spent his life operating a century farm in Gaskill Township with his wife and son, Bill.

Harold was a 40-year cancer survivor. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, Matt and Shannie, and his pets.

Harold had a wonderful sense of humor, always wore a smile and loved to make others smile. Harold always enjoyed the many visits from his friends who stopped by to visit him on the farm.

His favorite topic of conversation was the weather. He was also a gifted impersonator and gave everyone he knew a nickname. Harold was also an avid hunter, even hunting the morning of his wedding.

He is a past member of Past and Present Machine Association and Pennsylvania Farmer’s Association. He was a member of Chestnut Grove Independent Church.

He is survived by his wife, Helen, of Gaskill Township; a son, William F. “Bill” Rhoades and wife Cheryl of Gaskill Township; a daughter, Donna J. Rhoades of Punxsutawney; two grandchildren, Matthew W. Rhoades and wife Heather of Rochester Mills and Shannon N. Hamaker and husband Justin of Gaskill Township; three step-grandchildren, Kayla Gauding and husband Allen, Robert Shick and wife Stephanie and Kenneth Shick, all of Brockway.

He is also survived by a nephew, Byron Rhoades; nieces Sharon Zufall, Ardis Walsh, Michelle Lentz, Melanie Brooks, Kathy Clink, Karen Blance and Kris Edwards; and three cousins, Mary Jordan, Edna Shaum and Pauline Russ.

He was preceded in death by an infant brother and twin sister, Helen; his parents; brother George Rhoades; and a sister-in-law, Irma “Granny” Rhoades.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Brenda D. Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Big Run.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013, at the funeral home officiated by Pastor Phil Colgan and Pastor Al Kimmel.

Interment will follow in the Rhoades Family Cemetery in Gaskill Township.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Harold's memory to the Patient Care Fund at Punxsutawney Area Hospital c/o Karen Burkett, Big Run Volunteer Fire Company, or Grace United Methodist Church.
