Donald W. Buffington, 79

Donald W. Buffington, 79, of Winter Haven, Fla., passed away on Saturday, July 20, 2013, at The Heart of Florida Hospital after enduring a courageous 10-year battle with cancer.

He was formerly of Cogan Station, Pa.

He was born on May 25, 1934, in Beaver Township, Pa., the son of Dalton and Mary (Burkett) Buffington.

Donald was the husband of Elizabeth (Betty) Buffington. They would have observed their 59th wedding anniversary on Sept. 16, 2013.

He served in the U.S. Army in the Tank Division of the 29th Infantry at Fort Benning, Ga., from 1955 to 1957.

He graduated from Penn State in 1960 and pursued a career in structural engineering.

Donald was chief engineer for the Claster Steel Company in Williamsport, and later became vice president of P.B.I. Industries, overseeing plants in Williamsport, Rochester and Fort Worth, Texas.

He was a lifetime member of The Wheel Inn and 40/8 Club.

Don enjoyed gardening, golfing, hunting, the great outdoors and an occasional scotch.

He was a fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Tampa Bay Rays.

He enjoyed spending time with is children and grandchildren.

Don is survived by his wife, Betty, of Florida; one daughter, Sherree Shaffer (Robert Helminiak) of Montoursville, Pa.; two sons, Keith “Butch” (Elaine), and Stan (Amy) Buffington of Cogan Station, Pa.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by three brothers, Robert Buffington of Big Run, John Buffington of Mahaffey, and Jack Buffington of Big Run; and two sisters, Mary Lou Hill of Big Run and Jeannie McKee of Big Run.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela Buffington; and a granddaughter, Melissa Buffington.

A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
