BRADFORD — The Punxsy girls' basketball team may not be going to the playoffs, but it finished the 2010-2011 season strong.

Punxsy completed the season with a three-win week once it defeated Bradford Friday night, 48-30.

The Lady Chucks (7-15) won't enter the playoffs this year, but they swept the Lady Owls (12-10), who will meet St. Marys in the District IX Class AAA title game. St. Marys and Kayla Hoohuli are in search of a fourth-straight crown.

Punxsy senior Shawnna Crago had a huge game Friday, scoring 23 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Freshman Taylor Newcome had a career-best 15 points behind four three-pointers, and Jenna Reitz added 10 assists for the second-straight game.

Both Parris Kernich and Alex Magill scored four points, Kernich had eight rebounds, and Justine Kaza scored two points.

"It was a nice win for the seniors," Punxsy head coach Randy Reitz said. "This week was very special for them, winning three ball games and playing with a lot of heart and effort. They hustled every game."

Punxsy led 9-2 after the first quarter when a 21-point second quarter helped it take a 20-point advantage into halftime at 30-10.

"We did a nice job of moving he ball around offensivel," coach Reitz said. "We had good looks and knocked down some jump shots."

Newcome had four three-pointers at halftime, and Crago took off during the second half.

"(Newcome) really shot the ball well from the outside in the first half," Reitz said. "That opened up the interior for Shawnna and Parris."

The Lady Chucks won't be playing in the playoffs for the first time in Reitz's 10-year tenure, but he's glad they were able to finish strong.

"We're going to miss these kids," he said. "They're just a great group of kids."
