You voted, and we tallied! The 2014 Outstanding Spring Sports Athletes are Alyssa Reitz and Dakota Thomas. Reitz won with a total of 329 votes, and finished her softball season with the Chucks holding a .364 batting average and boasting 16 hits, eight RBI and 11 runs scored. Dakota Thomas received an impressive 457 votes, and ended his high school baseball season with a .386 batting average, 17 hits, seven RBI and nine runs scored. Congratulations to both of these athletes on all their achievements, and a special thanks to everyone who submitted votes.
The Punxsutawney Sr. Legion team faced off against Indiana Legion at home on Thursday night. Despite a solid defensive performance from both teams, Punxsy lost the game 5-1. Athletes from Punxsutawney and Brookville competed at the PIAA State Championship track and field meet this Friday. Among the more noteworthy competitors was Brandi Cooper, who placed seventh overall in the pole vault. Check out the full story in Saturday's edition of the Punxsutawney Spirit.
A day after the Chucks allowed 11 runs in the fourth inning against Altoona, Punxsy will take the field once again against the Clearfield Bison. While the Bison's record may not show it, they've had a number of one-run losses on the year. The Chucks will look to rebound from their 13-4 loss on Thursday with a win to kick the weekend off right.
While it may be spring, the winter weather isn't ready to leave. Because of a mix of snow, cold weather and rain, Punxsy was forced to reschedule tennis, baseball and softball this week. The bright spot, however, was that the boys' tennis team was able to take to the courts on Thursday, which provides hope that warmer weather is right around the corner.
The Chucks will take on the Uniontown Red Raiders tonight at DuBois Area Middle School for its first-round game of the PIAA state playoffs. Grab a copy of The Spirit today for a full preview of the game.
After having its Senior Night delayed multiple times, the Punxsy wrestling team will hit the mat tonight against DuBois, and it will honor its senior wrestlers. The match will be the last team match of the season for the Chucks.
Tonight is a big night for the Lady Chucks. Not only will they battle the Lady Owls of Bradford for a tie for the regular season D-IX title, but they'll honor three players for Senior Night â€”Â Emily Horner, Taylor Newcome and Ashley Reitz â€” as well. The boys' basketball team will also be in action, as it'll travel to Bradford to conclude its regular season.
