Meterko, Baker successful at state meet

November 9, 2010

HERSHEY — Up against the best runners in the state in the big school division, Punxsy senior A.J. Meterko and junior Dane Baker came away feeling pretty good about their performances Saturday in Hershey at the PIAA Class AAA Boys' Cross Country Championships.

Meterko, a senior who was competing in his third state meet, finished in 114th place with a time of 17:26 out of 283 runners. Baker, running at states for the second time, followed in 210th place in 18:09.

Confident Lady Chucks win at districts for sixth-straight time

November 8, 2010

CLARION — Entering the 2010 Punxsy volleyball season, much was made of the Lady Chucks' talent and experience with 11 seniors returning after 10 of them had been part of the program since they were seventh graders.

But the one thing they may have been lacking was a belief in just how good they were.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The 2010 Punxsy football team accomplished something that hasn't been done in more than three decades at Punxsutawney Area High School: An undefeated regular season.

A year after finishing 9-3 while hosting the District IX Class AAA Championship, and three seasons removed from a winless campaign, the Chucks completed the 2010 regular season with an unblemished 10-0 record.

Raiders beat Bulldogs in bizarre game

BROOKVILLE — In what was a bizarre football game from start to finish, the Brookville Raiders did enough to end the regular season with a home victory on Senior Night Friday.

During their 21-14 win over Redbank Valley, the Raiders encountered some good, some bad, and some really ugly situations on the field — situations that made Brookville look anything but the 8-2 team it is.

Meterko, Baker ready to run at states again

November 6, 2010

HERSHEY — Punxsy senior A.J. Meterko will make his third trip, and junior Dane Baker will compete for the second time at the PIAA Class AAA Cross Country Championships at noon today in Hershey.

It's been a while since a member of the Chucks has earned three-straight chances at winning a state title. Meterko finished in 180th place during each of his trips to states in 2008 and 2009. In '09, his time was 18:07, and his 2008 mark was 18:09.

Senior-laden Lady Chucks look for sixth-straight district crown

November 5, 2010

CLARION — When a team is coming off a championship-winning season, many say that the target has been firmly placed on that squad's back.

For the Punxsy volleyball team, one could say that said target has been branded on the Lady Chucks' backs. And that doesn't bother them one bit.

The Lady Chucks, who completed another sterling season by finishing 16-2, accepts the fact that they're the favorites in Saturday's District IX Class AA Championships at Clarion Area High School. With that in mind, they're in search of their sixth-straight district title.

Schall leads four Lady Chucks into state meet

November 5, 2010

HERSHEY — Though the Punxsy girls' cross country team was unable to win its third-straight District IX Class AAA title last Saturday in Ridgway, the Lady Chucks will still send four runners to Saturday's state meet in Hershey.

Punxsy is led by two-time individual district champion and senior Milea Schall. Also to compete Saturday will be senior Shannon Byerly, sophomore Alexis Young and freshman Juliann Boddorf.

Schall claimed Punxsy's fourth individual district crown in a row, following in Kelsey Acre's footsteps as a two-time winner. Acre won the title in 2007 and 2008.

Raiders unable to hang on, fall to N. Potter

November 5, 2010

DUBOIS — Things could not have started any better for the Brookville Raiders Thursday night during the District IX Class A boys' championship game.

Unfortunately for the Raiders, the game didn't end at halftime.

Brookville jumped out to an early 1-0 lead and held it into the second half before Northern Potter scored two second-half goals to win its second-straight District IX title in DuBois.

The loss leaves Brookville with a bitter taste, as the No. 7-seeded Raiders impressively reached the finals, only to surrender two late goals and miss out on their second title in three years.

CLARION — The Punxsy boys' soccer team fell one magical moment shy of winning a District IX Class AA Championship in its first-ever appearance in the district's final game of the season.

The Chucks (15-4-1) scored midway through the first half, but as the clock continued to roll, Bradford (14-6) came closer and closer to scoring the equalizer.

After the Owls tied the game with eight minutes remaining in regulation, they scored again with seven minutes left in double overtime to earn the district title Wednesday night at Clarion University's Memorial Stadium, 2-1.
