Gaynelle (Nanz) Borts, 93, Punxsutawney, died Monday, May 2, 2011, at Mahoning Riverside Manor, Punxsutawney.
She was born July 1, 1917, in Akron, Ohio, the daughter of the late William F. Nanz and LaRue (Bhe) Nanz Thomas.
June 17, 1944, she married Marley B. Borts, who preceded her in death Oct. 7, 2008.
Mrs. Borts was a life member of the First English Lutheran Church.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — For the third time in four years, the Punxsy boys' tennis team will compete in the District IX Class AAA Team Tournament Championship.
Behind a No. 1 singles win by senior Dave Roberts and victories in both doubles matches, the Chucks defeated Bradford in the semifinals Wednesday in Punxsutawney, 3-2.
Just a year ago, Punxsy was playing without a senior and lost to Bradford, 4-1, in the team semifinals. This season, behind one of its deepest and most experienced squads under head coach Todd Heigley, the Chucks are in search of that elusive team championship.
BROOKVILLE — Neither the players nor coaches for the Brookville and St. Marys softball teams were happy after the Lady Dutch beat the Lady Raiders 14-0 Wednesday in Brookville.
Tempers flared after St. Marys scored seven runs in the top of the seventh inning to extend its lead to 14-0.
Brookville coach Earl Ross objected to St. Marys coach Manny Gerarge continuing to run the bases aggressively, despite leading by double digits.
BROOKVILLE — The candidates for the Jefferson County Commission participated in a candidate’s forum Tuesday at the Jefferson County Courthouse.
The forum was sponsored by the Brookville and Punxsutawney Area and the Greater DuBois Area Chamber of Commerce, TURN (Taxpayers United for Representation Now) and Pennsylvana Freedom Fighters.
Each candidate was given time to answer several questions read by moderator Randy Bartley.
Wednesday’s Spirit featured the first question, regarding how government should be transparent for the people to easily follow.
BROOKVILLE — A former Brookville Junior-Senior High School math teacher and coach was sentenced to five to 10 years in a state correctional facility after she pleaded guilty to three counts of aggravated indecent assault Wednesday.
During Wednesday’s plea and sentencing court, Judge John H. Foradora sentenced Karin Hetrick, Summerville, to no less than five to a maximum of 10 years in a state correctional facility for the first count of aggravated indecent assault of a person less than 16 years of age.
